Concrete is one of the most important materials used during the construction of your home. Its quality depends on using the right proportions of cement, M sand, 20 mm metal aggregate, and water. Even if you are not from a construction background, you can easily check whether the concrete is being mixed correctly.
Why the Concrete Mix Matters
The strength and durability of concrete depend on accurate material proportions. If the mix contains too much or too little of any ingredient, the concrete may not achieve its intended strength. Incorrect proportions can also increase material wastage and construction costs.
Check How Materials Are Measured
Start by observing how the materials are measured on site. The same measuring box (kotta) used for M-sand and metal aggregate should also be used to measure the cement. Using a consistent measuring method helps maintain the correct mix ratio throughout the concreting process.
Standard M20 Concrete Mix for Residential Construction
For most residential homes, M20 grade concrete is commonly used for structural elements such as foundations, columns, beams, and slabs.
The typical mix proportion is:
- 1 box of cement
- 1.5 boxes of M-sand
- 3 boxes of 20 mm metal aggregate
Material Requirement for 1 m³ of M20 Concrete
To produce approximately cubic metre (1 m³) of M20 concrete, you will typically need:
- 8 bags of cement
- 15 CFT of M-sand
- 30 CFT of 20 mm metal aggregate
- 200 litres of water (approximately 25 litres per bag of cement)
These quantities may vary slightly depending on moisture content and site conditions, but they serve as a practical reference for residential construction.
