Who We Are
Integrated Total Design and Built Environment Consulting. Founded in Kozhikode in 2015, URU brings architects, engineers and designers together around the needs of each project.

URU Consulting was founded in 2015 in Kozhikode, Kerala, by four partners who shared a single conviction: that architecture and engineering practiced as separate disciplines produces worse outcomes for clients and worse buildings for the world. The firm began with residential and hospitality work in Kerala, and grew through a decade of projects that were published internationally and recognised by critics and peers across South Asia and the Middle East. The India practice serves clients across Kerala and Karnataka, including Kochi and Bangalore.
In 2025, the practice formalised its Gulf presence by establishing URU Design Services LLC in Dubai, a registered UAE entity serving clients across the GCC and MENA region. The firm now operates active projects in India, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Integrated Total Design and Built Environment Consulting is the core of our practice. We consider the site, architecture, interiors, landscape and technical systems as parts of a connected whole. Consulting helps clients define the brief, understand constraints and make informed decisions as the project develops. Our services and responsibilities are defined in the agreed project scope.
Our Dubai practice provides architecture, interior and landscape design. Engineering services for India-based projects are delivered through the India practice. We also welcome project enquiries and collaborations in Africa, with delivery arrangements and local partnerships assessed for each commission.
The name URU carries weight that is not accidental. URU is the ancient wooden vessel (dhow) of Kozhikode, handcrafted for over a thousand years by master craftsmen on the shores of Beypore, using teak and tropical hardwoods, assembled without a single nail, and traded across the Arabian Sea to merchants in the Gulf, Oman and East Africa. No two were identical. Each was made for the specific conditions of its commission: the cargo, the route, the sea. Recognised across the Gulf as a mark of Kozhikode craftsmanship, the URU was a locally made, internationally trusted object. That is the practice URU Consulting aspires to be: deeply rooted in its place of origin, fluent in the conditions of the Gulf, and built to endure.
The URU mark carries the same logic. It is an amalgamation of three scripts — the Malayalam rendering of URU, its Devanagari form, and Arabic calligraphy — resolved into a single geometric grid. The calligraphic style is Square Kufic (Kufi Murabba'), the oldest and most architectural of Arabic scripts, built on strict right angles and rectangular proportion. The three readings occupy the same space simultaneously. Clean, functional, containing multitudes. Red for integrity.

Architecture and engineering are not separate services that happen to share a building. At URU, they are resolved by the same team, from the first sketch. The consequence is not a smoother process. It is a fundamentally different kind of building: one where structure, space and environment are resolved together, without the friction that separate appointments introduce and the client ultimately pays for.
Every project is measured on a timeline longer than its completion date. The question we ask is not how a building looks on the day of handover, but what it becomes over fifty years. Materials are selected for durability, not cost at tender. Structural systems are designed for adaptability, not the minimum section. This is not an aesthetic preference. It is an ethical one.
The built environment is not neutral. Design and engineering are forms of intervention in how people live, work, move and relate to each other. A poorly ventilated house affects the health of the people who live in it. A public space designed for surveillance rather than occupation fails the community it was built to serve. We take that responsibility seriously, and we carry it into every brief we accept.

URU measures its work against the standards of mature multidisciplinary practice: integrated delivery, technical rigour and long-term client relationships. Those standards matter regardless of a practice's size.
Integration
A shared brief connects architecture, interiors, landscape and engineering. The disciplines and responsibilities are agreed for each project, with coordination considered from the start.
Climate Intelligence
Climate analysis precedes formal decisions. In Kerala, passive cooling is established before envelope geometry is fixed. In the Gulf, solar shading is a design generator, not a compliance overlay.
Regulatory Fluency
KMBR, KPBR, CRZ, BBMP, BDA, Dubai Municipality, Trakhees. We operate inside these frameworks as design conditions, not obstacles to work around at the end.
Institutional Tone
URU communicates as a technically mature practice. The work speaks first. Competitive strength comes from process depth and accumulated sector knowledge, not from marketing its personality.
