Box House

Box House is a contemporary tropical residence designed by Uru Consulting LLP in Malappuram, Kerala. Conceived as a calm and timeless family home, the project reflects a thoughtful balance between minimalist architecture, climate responsive design, and everyday living comfort. Surrounded by paddy fields, coconut trees, and a restored natural landscape, the house was designed to feel deeply connected to its environment while offering a peaceful and breathable lifestyle experience.

The architecture follows a simple yet refined design language inspired by Scandinavian minimalism and the warmth of Kerala’s tropical living culture. Clean geometric forms, deep shaded openings, and open spatial planning allow natural light, ventilation, and landscape views to become part of the daily living experience. Rather than focusing only on visual expression, the design was shaped around how the spaces feel throughout the day, cool, open, quiet, and naturally comfortable.

Inside the home, interconnected living spaces, courtyards, and open dining areas create a sense of flow and togetherness while maintaining privacy and spatial clarity. Neutral tones, natural textures, and carefully framed openings bring softness and warmth into the interiors, creating an atmosphere that feels minimal yet emotionally engaging. Every space was designed to support relaxed tropical living with an emphasis on comfort, openness, and connection between family members.

The project also reflects a strong sensitivity towards climate and sustainability. Existing site elements were preserved wherever possible, while passive cooling strategies, natural cross ventilation, shaded facades, and locally inspired materials help reduce heat gain and improve thermal comfort throughout the house. The integration of landscape, architecture, and environmental planning allows the residence to remain naturally connected to Kerala’s climate and surroundings.
