In a region where temperatures hover between 28–35°C and humidity rarely drops below 70%, the courtyard is far more than a cultural feature. It is a sophisticated micro-climate regulator that continues to outperform many modern mechanical solutions when designed with understanding.

The Science Behind the Courtyard
A well-proportioned courtyard creates a stack effect — warm air rises and exits through higher openings while cooler, denser air is drawn in from shaded zones. In our projects in Malappuram and Kondotty, courtyards of 4m × 5m with 1:1.2 height-to-width ratio have shown measurable temperature drops of 5–7°C in adjacent rooms without any active cooling.
Beyond temperature, courtyards regulate:

We no longer treat courtyards as purely central voids. In contemporary plans, we use:

- Partially covered or louvred courtyards for multi-functional use
- Integration with water features for evaporative cooling
- Strategic planting (tall palms or flowering trees) that evolves with seasons

Key Lesson from Practice
The most effective courtyards are those where every dimension is derived from climate data and family ritual, not from visual symmetry alone.
