Eleven years ago, in a small room in Kozhikode, four people decided that the buildings around them deserved more thought than they were getting. There was no grand launch. There was a drawing board, a borrowed sense of confidence, and a conviction that architecture, engineering and interiors should not live in separate rooms.

That conviction became Uru.

Where the name comes from

An uru is the great wooden vessel of the Malabar coast, built by hand in Beypore for centuries and sailed across the Arabian Sea. It is made without shortcuts, by people who understand that every joint carries weight. We took the name because it described the kind of practice we wanted to build: patient, collaborative, and made to travel.

Eleven years, one idea

From the beginning, Uru was built around a simple belief: a building is not a set of disciplines stitched together at the end. It is one conversation, held from the first sketch to the final handover. Architecture, structure, services, interiors and site management sit at the same table here, because that is where good decisions get made.

Over the years that belief has taken many forms. Homes shaped around the families who live in them. Workplaces designed for the way people actually work. Commercial and hospitality spaces where the experience matters as much as the floor plan. Each project has taught us something, and most of what we know today we learned on site, standing next to the people who build.

Growing, carefully

Growth at Uru has never been about size for its own sake. It has been about range and responsibility.

URU Consulting LLP remains our home practice in Kerala, delivering multi-discipline design and engineering.

URU Projects grew out of a recurring frustration: watching good designs lose their way during execution. It now carries our work through project management and implementation, so that what is drawn is what gets built.

URU Design Services LLC opened in Dubai in 2025, taking the same way of working to the GCC.

Three entities, one studio culture.

The people

None of this belongs to a logo. It belongs to the architects, engineers, designers, site teams and support staff who have passed through our doors, some for a season, many for years. It belongs to the clients who trusted a young firm with their homes and their businesses, and to the contractors and craftspeople who turned drawings into rooms.

To every one of them: thank you. Eleven years is your number as much as ours.

What comes next

We are entering our twelfth year with the same questions we started with. How should a building feel? Who is it really for? What will it mean to the people who live with it long after we have left the site?

We do not expect to answer those questions completely. We expect to keep asking them, carefully, on every project.

Here's to the next chapter.
