A courtyard can organise a home around a protected outdoor space, but its performance depends on the site and design. It should not be assumed to cool every surrounding room or remain comfortable throughout the year. Begin with the household's activities and the court's relationship to the rooms.

Decide what the courtyard is for

Is it a place to sit, a view from living spaces, a planted garden or a route through the house? Several roles may coexist, but they should be deliberate. A court used as the main circulation route needs different consideration from one intended as a quiet private garden.

Place furniture and everyday activities on the plan. Test whether doors, planting and movement leave a usable place to sit.

Balance openness and privacy

Study views from adjoining rooms, upper floors and neighbouring properties. A courtyard enclosed on the ground floor may still be overlooked from above. Consider the relationship between guest reception, family areas and bedrooms without assuming that one cultural layout suits every household.

Ask the design team to show the court from seated positions inside the house. The experience of the edge often matters more than the view from the centre.

Study exposure and environmental strategy

Review sun, shade, wind, dust and the proposed planting with the appropriate specialists. Discuss which openings will be used and under what conditions. Natural ventilation and air-conditioning arrangements should be coordinated rather than treated as competing slogans.

Plan drainage, waterproofing at adjacent rooms and access to landscape systems. A planted court also needs a route for maintenance and replacement that does not make the house difficult to operate.

Test alternatives before fixing the geometry

Compare a central courtyard, a side garden and a sequence of smaller outdoor spaces against the same brief. The best option depends on plot shape, privacy and room organisation, not a preference for a particular architectural image.

For Dubai, the municipality's building-code resources provide an official starting point for the applicable design requirements. Other Gulf locations need their own assessment. Ask for a courtyard proposal that explains daily use and seasonal limits alongside its visual character.
