There is something distinctive about living in a suburb, for it provides one with a bridge between the qualities of both urban and rural. Suburbs are where city-dwellers extend and build their city, also escape from it. Team Uru's client Mr. Manu Joseph's 1700 sqft. home, situated at Kakkanad in the suburbs of Ernakulam, is such a space where they wanted to build their slice of urban life.
Kakkanad is a prime industrial as well as residential area of the city of Kochi, Kerala. It is one of the fastest growing suburbs of the city into urban spaces with Infopark, smart city, and KINFRA park at its centre. It was the intention of Mr. Manu and his family to build a stand-alone villa that had the qualities and cost of an urban luxury apartment. What they looked for in their dream house was their own space to park their vehicles, to plant and nurture their own garden, and to drink from their well, and to sit in their courtyard to spend some family time.
The limitation of the plot has been overcome by the plan of the house characterized by its openness. The living room is shaped up along with a courtyard which is in terms connected with the compound wall. The use of a grill for the courtyard contributes to the safety of the house. One can easily step out into the courtyard from the living room, by sliding open the UPVC windows. Sunlight and air freely floods in through this feature of the house. The design has been kept simple with a pure geometric pattern. The colour palette goes along with the design with the exposed and decorous shades of the earthy brown, delicate white and sober grey.
